By placing a log between the tires, we're essentially giving the truck a temporary traction aid. Imagine you're trying to climb a rope but keep slipping. If you wedge a stick between your feet and the rope, you can push against it to get a better grip and climb up. Similarly, when a log is placed between the truck's tires, it acts as a solid surface for the tires to push against. As the tires spin, they grip the log instead of the loose gravel.
